Ok so I finally decided to 'retire' my old inherited Mossberg 500 and pick up my first brand new shotgun. I had been wanting to add things for a while but couldn't bring myself to change my grandpas old gun. So after days of going back and forth, and nearly buying an 870 or the Benelli Nova tactical, I decided to stick with what I know and love, the good ole cheap 500. I figured I could get the gun itself, an 18.5" barrel, and some shells for less than the price of the 870 express, and have a gun with 3 chokes and two barrels that would function fine, be reliable and I'm familiar with the platform. And I won't feel bad about experimenting with it.

So I did, popped in to Walmart today and picked up my new baby for a whopping $209 + tax. Oh, and I had an extra $25 basspro gift card so I drove up there and nabbed a new bag with attached accessory pouch, and a box of flite control 00.

And as she's sitting right now:

So first order of business is a shorter barrel to wear while she does defense duty, but the 28" will be swapped on for busting clays. So that's my for sure first mod. But after that the list goes;

1. Sling. How? what are my options for attaching one? I'm not a fan of single point slings. And I'm fairly new to guns still so I'm not well versed on the mounting options. Literally any and all help will be appreciated here.

2. Stock. I'm always so back and forth on the synthetic vs wood look as I like both. But I think I would like to try the hogue over molded LOP stock. I hate pistol grips, they're worthless. Just a traditional style stock for me. Also, these have a sling mount correct? So I'd need one on the mag/barrel screw or something? Any other recommendations?

3. Light. I'm not sold on this to be honest, I'm back and forth on it being unnecessary, and being nice to have. What are the mounting options? Which light?

I am very much the KISS type. And I'm also not trying to throw $400 worth of accessories on a $200 shotgun lol, but I would appreciate advice.

What is patterning? How do I do it?

Any ammo I should try? Stay away from? I've only ever shot Federal Target Loads busting clays, Winchester Super X 00 and Win Super X Slugs. All through the old gun, no chokes, the wole choke thing is confusing as well lol.

Thanks guys! And sorry to be a pain! Can't wait to take this thing to the range.Statistics: Posted by Romac1314 — Sat May 19, 2012 6:32 am
What you've done looks pretty good. I wouldn't mind seeing some larger, clearer and more detailed pictures.

I got a few new pictures today, you can really see how rough it is. That stuff is a lot harder to work than wood!
Like i said it's still rough, but after i get the body work done they should look ok. I still don't know how to get larger pictures on here, they all come out the same size! can someone PM me and tell me how?Statistics: Posted by Dtssma — Fri May 18, 2012 9:17 pm

Sqareload,
Thanks for the insight into what the flat POW is. If I'm looking at it correctly, it is simply a more open grip than a standard POW, and a lot more open than my Browning Citori. Below is a picture from the Ugartechea website showing their stock choices. I'm three months into waiting for my model 257 to be built and ordered #3 that they call a semi-pistol grip that may be a flat POW. It appears very similar to my S&W Elite Gold POW stock.

long story short, walked into the dicks sporting goods store in my town, went to the gun counter, and I couldn't help myself but to pick up one of these awesome autos. Took it straight to the range and shot 150 light target loads through it with no issues, and the gun runs fairly clean, not much fouling occurs even in the gas system, this gun has a similar feel to my 1100 but at the same time feels very different, it swings well and the weight is right, kick is softer then the 1100 but is a little sharper as well. I tell you what, this gun looks like a Corvette but drives like a Cadillac.

My rifle came back last Wednesday, and I didn't touch it until Saturday when I went to clean it. The Tipton .17/.20 jag and brushes will not do an effective job on a .20. So I ordered some stuff from Midway, which came today. Tonight I clean and prep the barrel, tomorrow I'll hit the range to sight in and break in the barrel.
